Foundations of Education This course explores the foundations disciplines (history, philosophy, psychology, and sociology of education) and their application to educational issues including school organization and teaching, curriculum and pedagogic practices, education and inequality and school reform and improvement, focuses on establishing a basic foundation for pre-service teachers.
The content of the course includes the definition of education, the relevant rationales for education, the contents of education, the approaches of education, educational institutes and practices, and the professional ethical and legal issues in education.

Upon completing the course, students will be able to:

Philosophy of Education This course introduces educational philosophy, which includes the nature, model, disciplines, contents, and methods of education. It will assume a criticism regarding education and interpret the relationships between education and other sciences or the known world. Using the simple language that students can understand makes an introduction of this course. Students enable to understand the basic knowledge of educational philosophy and also provide an opportunity for students to evaluate their educational principles.

  2. Apply the paradigms of educational philosophy to explore Eastern and Western educational theories or contemporary important educational issues for writing research projects as the term papers.
Sociology of Education This course aims to enhance students’ knowledge of sociology. Students should use sociological perspectives to analyze the educational system and problems, social structure, the relationships between social transformation and education, school organization and cultures ,classes with social system, and relationship among teachers, parents, and students.

Educational Administration The course, education administration, is to let students understand basic concept, theory, meaning and applying of education administration, assisting students to understand the meaning and function of education administration existing in education system. By using of various functions of education administration to increase the effectiveness of educational activities through analyzing and discussing in class.
  1. Be able to explain the history, relevant concept, theory, and the meaning of education administration.
  2. Be able to use the content taught in the course to analyze advantages and disadvantages of related educational administrative measures in Taiwan.

Educational Laws, Regulations and Practice This course will be mainly lectured by teacher. Students must assist teacher in making powerpoint file and group reports on educational administration materials. Then, teachers and pupils will conduct comprehensive discussion. During the course, teachers will invite experts ,from time to time, to give a speech to increase the depth and breadth of the course.

Teaching Principles and Learning Assessment The course introduces teacher candidates to current theories and practices for effective classroom instruction and assessment. Focuses primarily on competence-based instruction and assessment in 12-Year Basic Education Curricula.
Key topics covered include: a) basic theories and concepts in relation to teaching and assessment, b) multiple teaching strategies and assessment, c) teaching and assessment in cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains, d) learner-centered instruction and assessment, e) competence-based teaching and assessment, and f) issues encountered by teachers and students in classroom teaching and assessment.

Students will also experience the process of designing lesson plans.

Well-organized and managed classrooms set the stage for student learning and achievement. Students will explore a range of models and strategies that will serve as a foundation for developing a personal approach to classroom management.

Principles and Practice of Guidance This course of “Counseling Guidance” mainly introduces the basic counseling concepts, procedure, techniques, professional ethics, the current school situation related to conseling, the personality traits that counselors need. Besides, students will also be aware of current situation and a trendency in the future of school counseling

Introduction to Special Education Introduce the current knowledge on individuals with special needs (ranging from students with varying disabilities to gifted students), including legislation, etiology, characteristics, needs, educational strategies and support services for individuals with disabilities. In addition, this course will also help teacher candidates have a healthy mind and make an adjustment to teach students with special needs in class.

The Development and Guidance of Children The main idea of this course is let students get the ideas of the elementary childs’ mind and body development and how to treat them in guaidance and assistance ways. The context includes 1. The main point and meanings of Children developing; 2. The body development and guaidance and assistance of elementary children; 3. The cognitive development and guaidance and assistance of elementary children; 4. The creation development as well as guaidance and assistance of elementary children; 5. The emotional development as well as guaidance and assistance of elementary children; 6. The languages development as well as guaidance and assistance of elementary children; 7. The societal behaviors development as well as guaidance and assistance of elementary children. The cognition : Students can realize the developing mission of children in different period of time;
student will be able to get the ideas of children’s cognition and moving development in different period of time;
and students will be able to have the ideas about the emotional development in different period of time.
The emotios: Students will have to train more patience and love with children by knowing much more about them.

Gender Education This course introduces the gender from the single role first, then discuss the gender equality education in the national education; and introduce how to blend the gender education with every boundary. This course will introduce the growing of the two genders and the relations between their interaction.

According to the grade 1-9 Curriculum,establishing the concepts of the gender equality education carry on points,
we hope this course will make the teachers have the view of gender equality and expect they will have the designing the gender equality materials and lesson plans ability.
At the end of the course, the expectation aims are:

Remedial Instruction Remedial Teaching is mainly teaching students that the problem may face in the future. The purposes of this course are educating students to design different types of materials for students who are in different learning level. By understanding (Chinese, Math, and English) lower lever students mind and how to assess & diagnose their problems by teaching strategies. To achieve “teach students in accordance with their aptitude”,
students in the class will be training how to assess and diagnose lower level students.
Integration of Educational Issues into Teaching The course includes Aesthetic Education, Gender Education, Human Rights Education, Labor Education, Legal Education, Life Education, Moral Education, Home Economic Education, Family Education, Marine Education, Multicultural Education, New Immigrant Education, Aboriginal Education, Media Literacy Education, Career Development Education, Environmental education, drug education, sex education, international education, safety and disaster prevention education, financial education, consumer protection education, tourism and leisure education, alternative education, life education and other emerging topics. Three or four important topics will be selected from those issues. It will be adjusted properly based on education trends and teaching environment.

Educational Practicum This course aims to teach students basic educational theories and to assist them in meeting the qualifications of being elementary-school teahcers.

Teaching Materials and Methods for Mathematics The course focuses on the basic concepts of mathematics teaching, developing students’ mathematical skills, new trends in mathematics teaching, deigning some topics of the field of mathematics based on grade 1-9 curriculum. It can not only assist students in using various mathematics teaching strategies, but design a systematic mathematical course. To understand each teaching approaches to math as well as design math courses fit with grade 1-9 curriculum by applying multi-functional teaching strategies.
Teaching Materials and Methods for Chinese This course is to let students understand the meaning, tasks, teaching approaches, traditional Chinese symbols teaching, speaking teaching, alphabet teaching, reading skills teaching, composition teaching, and writing teaching of effectiveness methods of Teaching Materials and Methods for Chinese.

Various EFL teaching materials aiming to enrich language learning environments will be introduced and discussed. Students will work to develop an EFL lesson for their future EFL teaching contexts.

Teaching Materials and Methods for Social Studies This course will help prepare students to become effective social studies educators who are capable of teaching elementary students the content knowledge, social skill, and the civic values necessary for fulfilling the responsibilities of citizenship in a participatory democracy. Special attention is given to curriculum goals, 9 thematic strands, content knowledge, vital social issues, effective teaching strategies, and instructional assessment in social studies. The clinical experience component of this course provides students with extended opportunity to observe, teach, and create lesson plans in small group.

Chinese Phonology and Speaking This course will help students understand the theory of Chinese phonetics, assist them in speaking standard Mandarin and also enhance students’ ability to teach Mandrin.

Chinese Calligraphy The purpose of this course is to introduce the history and development of chirography of Chinese calligraphy and to enhance students’ abilities on appreciation of the calligraphy vestige through the calligraphy writing. Besides, students will learn how to have a beautiful handwring by using chinese brushes, pens and chalks.

Literature for Children and Young Adults The course « Literature for Children and Young Adult » introduces well-known picture books, authors, illustrators, mulicultural literature, international literature as well as the relationship between literature and children and young adults. We will seek to understand characteristics of children’s and young adults’ literature. This course is designed to expend your experience and understanding of children’s and young adults’ literature.

At the end of the course, students will be able to :

  1. familiarize with the main genres of books for children (up to age 12 years) and young adults (up to age 16 years or so)
  2. familiarize with the components of books and make story books.
  3. understand the means of story telling and use literatures in English teaching and curriculum.
  4. develop criticle thinkings regarding traditional literatures.
Native Languages The course includes the words chart of Mandarin and native languages, Roman Pinyin, common daily conversations, Chinese slang as well as the usage of Taiwanese. The aim of this subject is to assist students to understand native languages vocabulary and apply in daily-life and job of service industry to enhance oral-communication with different groups and generations.
New Immigrant Languages The main teaching content includes phonetic systems, basic characters, daily conversations, and cultures of new immigrant languages. This course also aims to develop students’ basic language teaching knowledge. This course will provide fundamental language training as well as basic knowledge regarding teaching that particular immigrant language.
