Never let COVID-19 stop faculty learning EMI Skills!

2020-03-03 10:00:00

Dear faculty members,

In January 2020, we received positive feedback and recommendation from participants for the face-to-face Workshop on Academic Teaching Excellence co-developed by British Council and Oxford University, UK, so we planned to have another one in July 2020. However, due to the global outbreak of COVID-19, multiple events or gatherings have been cancelled or put off to avoid human-to-human transmission.  In order not to let COVID-19 stop faculty learning, instead we offer online courses provided by Cambridge Assessment English, part of Cambridge University, UK, and the course participants should form a learning community to learn, interact, and progress with each other together.

Would you like to learn how to offer EMI courses?  Welcome to sign up the program on Certificate in EMI Skills as soon as possible!

Date & Time: 00:01~23:59 from March to July, 2020 (Tentative schedule)
Method: Online course, assessment, and learning community.  The online courses and assessment are composed of 8 modules.  Each module takes 5 hours.  The total learning hours are 40.  Participants are expected to complete each and every module in 2 weeks and form a learning community to exchange their reflections and find better teaching practices together.

Enrollment: Please enroll at https://reurl.cc/e50mQW by 05:00 PM, Mar. 11, 2020.

Flexible and available online learning approaches due to COVID-19

2020-02-25 15:58:00

Due to COVID-19, three flexible and available online learning approaches are advised as below.

Asynchronous learning involves coursework delivered via web, email and message boards that are then posted on online forums.
Cloud e-Learning platform is the best interactive system for accessing learning materials, submitting assignments, taking online tests, and conducting online forums.
Students also can access learning materials and assignments by E-mails, LINE, WeChat, or Google Drive.

Synchronous learning involves online studies through videoconferencing and chat.
Videoconferencing: Visit http://connect.wzu.edu.tw, make reservations, and conduct a video conference by using Adobe Connect.
Chat: Use Chatroom for Online Discussion in Cloud e-Learning platform for instant messaging.
Use E-mail, LINE, WeChat, YouTube, and Facebook that have live videos or chatrooms for synchronous and asynchronous learning.

Blended learning is a combination of asynchronous and synchronous learning based on course design.

The above-mentioned three approaches are subject to Wenzao’s course storage, system usage, and network traffic flow.  If the total network traffic flow exceeds the limit of the system, your network connection might appear slow.  In order to have smooth network connection, teachers are advised to adopt flexible and available learning approaches which require less network traffic flow.

The following is an overview of different learning approaches and network traffic flow for your reference.

Network Traffic Flow Application Synchronous Learning Asynchronous Learning Remarks
Heavy

Smooth
Adobe Connect ˇ Maximum user number: 500 at the same time
Video materials in Cloud e-Learning Platform ˇ Maximum user number: 2,000 at the same time
Chatroom for Online Discussion in Cloud e-Learning Platform ˇ
Files such as Word, PPT, PDF and discussion boards in Cloud e-Learning Platform ˇ ˇ
LINE, WeChat, YouTube, Facebook, and Wenzao Google Drive (by using Wenzao’s bandwidth) ˇ ˇ No user number limit, but it will occupy Wenzao’s bandwidth.

  • developed strategies that will help them to implement effective group tasks in the EMI environment
  • developed strategies that enable them to increase student achievement, motivation and participation levels in the EMI environment
  • developed their understanding of how to use visual aids effectively in the EMI environment
  • enhanced their ability to provide effective feedback in the EMI environment
  • developed their abilities to deal with students with mixed language abilities and from mixed cultural backgrounds
  • continued to improve their overall English lecturing and language abilities

Media Resources

In order to provide the teachers and students with legal use of media materials, we have been dedicated to creating a media data bank. At present, the main structure of the data bank is based on language teaching needs. The first stage is to collect life photos and images such as food, clothing, travel, education, and entertainment.

We also collect photos of events and scenes for producing teaching materials.

We also have staff and studios for creating high quality videos and audios.
