Encouraging Arts Students for Interdisciplinary Learning, Wenzao Invites Female Tech Leaders to Give Career Talk

Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages co-organized the “Women in Science and Technology Seminar – Overturn Prejudice: The Multiverse of Women in Science and Technology” in hand with the Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration. Poling Liu, Country HR Manager for Taiwan and Southeast Asia at ASML Taiwan, and Pearl Tan, Communications and Public Relations Manager at Applied Materials Taiwan were invited to share their career experience and engage in dialogues with the students.

When giving a speech, Chief Secretary Hsiu-Jen Lin of Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration expressed that the Administration has established a lot of new science parks in recent years. Apart from the existing Tainan and Lujhu Science Parks, new science parks in Taibao of Chiayi, Phase 3 extension of the Tainan Park, and those in Ciaotou and Pingtung are to be established in succession; there will be considerable manpower demands from the science parks in the future. Lin further stated that not just people with science and technology backgrounds are needed in the science parks, interdisciplinary talents are gaining greater recognition in recent years. Thus, Wenzao students with their international perspective and foreign language skill definitely have an edge that ensures a better position to access the technology discipline.

Poling Liu, Country HR Manager for Taiwan and Southeast Asia at ASML Taiwan, suggested the attending students to give multifaceted considerations when making their career choice, find a good working environment to support their changing ambitions in various stages of life. She added that ASML looks for interdisciplinary talents with creative thinking, who are positive, spontaneous, and independent individuals of integrity, possess problem-solving skills, and are team players. Semiconductor is a key industry in Taiwan, she emphasized, and corporations demand more language professionals. Allowing more students with interdisciplinary training to understand the basic knowledge relating to the semiconductor industry in an early stage would give them more career possibilities and options.

Pearl Tan, Communications and Public Relations Manager at Applied Materials Taiwan, revealed that there are many departments at Applied Materials Taiwan suitable for Wenzao students, including the human resources, finance, order management, internal audit, procurement, etc. The company’s Global Customer Center is also in great demand for interdisciplinary talents with excellent foreign language skill. Therefore, she encouraged Wenzao students to take early steps to discern the technology industry and develop one’s career soft power.

This Women in Science and Technology Seminar is co-organized by Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages to help Wenzao students broaden their horizons in different domains. Wenzao’s Career Development Center has been in close and consistent cooperation with Southern Taiwan Science Park for academia-industry training. Apart from assisting enterprises in talent recruitment, the University has also offered courses pertaining to the green industry, zero carbon emission, and ESG. Meanwhile, the University has also made consistent effort to offer the “Training of High-Tech Industry Talent” program in collaboration with the nearby science parks, working with international technology manufacturers and industrial experts to help students’ transition to the high-tech workplace and the national education of more outstanding technology talents.
