Chinese-American Elected Officials (CEO) visited Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages together with Director-general Yen-Ching Chang of the Department of Administrative and International Affairs, Kaohsiung City Government. The visitors were given cordial welcome by President Hwei-Lin Chuang, Vice President Shu-tan Lin, and other senior administrators of Wenzao. American students who won scholarships under the U.S. Department of State’s NSLI-Y program also participated in the event to exchange thoughts with the delegation and share their learning experience and gains in Taiwan.
In her speech, Wenzao’s President Hwei-Lin Chuang explicated that Wenzao was founded by sisters of the Roman Union of the Order of St. Ursula, with internationalization being the core of Wenzao’s educational mission. Wenzao is dedicated to education that equips students with the “3L” capabilities (i.e. the three key competencies: Life, Language, and Leadership), helping students in their whole-person development into all-round individuals with excellent language ability and the power to make a difference, in expectation that they would communicate and collaborate effectively with people worldwide.
The delegation consisted of various committee members from different American cities and this was CEO’s first visit to Taiwan in 20 years, said Stan Liu, CEO President and Diamond Bar City Council Member. He further stated that American parents place great emphasis on language education and are particularly fond of immersive language courses for their children. Since language is a bridge across borders, overcoming the language barrier means a step forward in global cooperation and understanding. Therefore, it is extremely meaningful to be able to learn the Chinese language in Taiwan.
In the gathering, Wenzao had the scholarship-winning students from the American National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) share their learning experience in Taiwan. The delegation expressed great interest in the NSLI-Y execution and the students’ learning condition in Wenzao, paying particular attention to details about their host families and course arrangement. Wenzao’s diligent and committed efforts in the program was highly appreciated. The CEO delegation was grateful for Wenzao’s hospitable reception and expected more exchange and cooperation in the future that promote bilateral development.
