The 17th Cross-Strait Conference on Foreign Language Teaching and Learning was held at Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages. The theme for the conference this year was A Way Forward for Foreign Language Education and Its Policies. Following the previous practice, the conference included a president forum and a sub-forum. 32 scholars from four universities: Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, Fu Jen Catholic University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Shanghai International Studies University, presented their papers online for the conference. On the president forum, the universities talked about their school features and educational philosophies and elaborated on how to bridge foreign language education with future industrial development.
Instead of stressing individual foreign languages, the conference this year focused on the establishment and effectiveness of platforms and mechanisms for cross-disciplinary foreign language education (courses, course groups and programs), the cultivation of foreign language talents in the AI era, and the relationship between foreign language teaching and university social responsibility. Participants shared their opinions on these topics based on their experience, research, and observations in the teaching of foreign languages.
Aiming to strength cross-Strait academic exchanges, advance academic research, facilitate cross-Strait higher education interaction, and promote the sharing of experiences in foreign language teaching and learning, Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages has been working with Fu Jen Catholic University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Shanghai International Studies University since 2004 in taking turn to host the Cross-Strait Conference on Foreign Language Teaching and Learning. As of 2019, the four universities have successfully held 16 conferences, where researchers, teachers, scholars, and experts engaged in practical and forward-looking discussions, generating profound insights into foreign language teaching.
